“The Ideology of the Nazis” is a two-part documentary for ORF III Part 1 - Blut und Boden: The Long Road to the “Anschluss”; Part 2 - The "Master Race" and its Little "Weaving Flaws": Nazi Racial Policy. The first part explores the question of why many Austrians saw Austria's "Anschluss" to Hitler's Germany in 1938 as salvation. Where does the longing for the unification of the two German-speaking states come from? The idea of an “Anschluss” was already present at the inception of the First Republic in 1919. Banned by the Triple Entente, it was nevertheless incessantly promoted by influential personalities. The “Anschluss” idea, which was appropriated by the Nazis, is therefore by no means new, but looks back on a long tradition in Austria. The second part is about the Nazis' racial ideology, which is deeply engraved in people's consciousness. No wonder, since the entire Nazi state - at least since the Nuremberg Race Laws - was geared towards "keeping German blood pure" and discriminating against and persecuting the Jewish population. The indoctrination began in schools with the subject "racial studies" and was reinforced in the Hitler Youth, but also in other Nazi organisations. The so-called Reichssippenamt (“kinship authority”) in Berlin and its branch office in Vienna were supposed to watch over the "purity" of the German blood in the best official tradition.

"Die Ideologie der Nazis" ist eine zweiteilige Dokumentation für ORF III Teil 1 - Blut und Boden: Der lange Weg zum "Anschluss" Teil 2 - Die "Herrenrasse" und ihre kleinen "Webfehler": NS-Rassenpolitik Der erste Teil geht der Frage nach, warum viele ÖsterreicherInnen den „Anschluss“ Österreichs an Hitler-Deutschland 1938 als Erlösung empfanden. Woher kommt die Sehnsucht nach der Vereinigung der beiden deutschsprachigen Staaten? Schon 1919 steht ein Anschlussgedanke an der Wiege der Ersten Republik. Von der Triple Entente verboten, wird er dennoch unaufhörlich von einflussreichen Persönlichkeiten beworben. Die durch die Nationalsozialisten vereinnahmte Anschlussidee ist also keineswegs neu, sondern blickt in Österreich auf eine lange Tradition zurück. Im zweiten Teil geht es um die Rassenideologie der Nazis, die sich tief in das Bewusstsein der Menschen eingegraben hat. Kein Wunder, war doch der gesamte NS-Staat – spätestens seit den Nürnberger Rassegesetzen - darauf ausgerichtet, "deutsches Blut rein zu halten" und die jüdische Bevölkerung zu diskriminieren und zu verfolgen. Die Indoktrinierung begann schon in den Schulen mit dem Unterrichtsfach "Rassenkunde" und wurde in der Hitlerjugend, aber auch in anderen NS-Organisationen, noch verstärkt. Das so genannte Reichssippenamt in Berlin und seine Zweigstelle in Wien sollten in bester Beamtentradition über die "Reinheit" des deutschen Blutes wachen.
