“Through the world back home” is the title of the 2006 autobiography of Frederic Morton, who was born Fritz Mandelbaum in 1924 in Vienna. From early on, it seemed that home was a place he had to find within himself, for in the 30s of the last century it was made clear to him that his hometown and place of his birth Vienna could no longer be considered home. Like so many others the Mandelbaum family had to flee Austria, leaving all their worldly goods behind them. In the Night of Broken Glass, Frederic Mortons carefree childhood came to an abrupt end. On this night, his father was arrested and deported to Dachau. After four months he was able to escape on the condition he “left the German Reich”. On July 1939 he traveled with his son Fritz to London. His mother and younger brother remained in Vienna. With an American visa they were able to flee on one of the last flights to Great Britain; in 1940 they traveled to America by ship. The basis of the portrait is conversations, intercut with recordings of him in the places which provided a backdrop to his childhood in Vienna and those places from his current life in New York, supplemented by historical archive material, private photos of the family and texts from his books.

„Durch die Welt nach Haus“ nennt Frederic Morton, 1924 in Wien als Fritz Mandelbaum geboren, seine 2006 auf Deutsch erschienene Autobiographie. Zu Hause war für ihn wohl sehr früh ein Ort, den er in sich selbst finden musste, denn in den 30er Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts wurde ihm deutlich klar gemacht, dass seine Heimat und Geburtsstadt Wien kein zu Hause mehr für ihn sein konnte. Wie so viele andere musste auch die Familie Mandelbaum unter Zurücklassung ihres gesamten Besitzes aus Österreich fliehen. In der Reichskristallnacht, wurde Frederic Mortons unbeschwerte Kindheit jäh beendet. In dieser Nacht wurde sein Vater festgenommen und ins Konzentrationslager Dachau deportiert. Nach vier Monaten gelang es ihm zu entkommen, unter der Bedingung ""das deutsche Reich zu verlassen"". Im Juli 1939 reiste er mit seinem Sohn Fritz nach London. Die Mutter und sein kleiner Bruder blieben noch in Wien. Mit einem amerikanischen Visum gelang ihnen mit einem der letzten Flugzeuge die Flucht nach Großbritannien - 1940 fuhr man mit dem Schiff nach Amerika. Gespräche bilden das inhaltliche Rückgrat der Publikation, unterschnitten mit Aufnahmen von ihm an den Schauplätzen seiner Kindheit in Wien und denen seines jetzigen Lebens in New York, ergänzt durch historisches Archivmaterial, private Fotos der Familie und Texte aus seinen Büchern.
