Around 200 commemorative signs of persecution and resistance under the Nazi regime and of liberation from Nazi rule can be found in Burgenland. The book aims to document the variety of signs, memorial plaques, graves, memorial stones, monuments or works of art and to draw attention to the fates of the victims in order to honour them and keep their memory alive. Likewise, the author analyses the development of the culture of remembrance and commemoration in Burgenland and reconstructs its manifold social and political developments. The so-called “victim theory” shaped the self-image and projected image of official Austria and Burgenland until the 1980s. It was not until the 1990s that there was an increasing change in the culture of remembrance. A new sensitivity towards repression, forgetting and glossing over certain negatively charged historical events slowly made itself felt. In the richly illustrated book, readers learn which victim groups of dominate the landscape of remembrance and where there are still empty spaces in Burgenland. The publication will also help those politically responsible and provide them with better access to their regional culture of history and commemoration.

Rund 200 Erinnerungszeichen zu Verfolgung und Widerstand im Nationalsozialismus und zur Befreiung von der NS-Diktatur befinden sich im Burgenland. Das Buch will die Vielfalt der Zeichen, Gedenktafeln, Grabstellen, Gedenksteine, Denkmäler oder Kunstwerke dokumentieren und die Schicksale der Opfer aufzeigen, um diese zu würdigen und die Erinnerung an sie wachzuhalten. Ebenso analysiert der Autor die Entwicklung der Erinnerungs- und Gedenkkultur im Burgenland und rekonstruiert deren vielfältigen gesellschaftlichen und politischen Wandel. Die so genannte Opfertheorie prägte bis in die 1980er-Jahre das Selbstverständnis und die Selbstdarstellung des offiziellen Österreich und des Burgenlandes. Erst ab den 1990er-Jahren kam es zunehmend zu einem Wandel in der Erinnerungskultur. Eine neue Sensibilität gegenüber Verdrängung, Vergessen und Ausblenden von bestimmten negativ behafteten historischen Geschehnissen machte sich langsam bemerkbar. In dem reich bebilderten Buch erfahren die Leserinnen und Leser, welche Opfergruppen die Erinnerungslandschaft dominieren und wo noch Leerstellen im Burgenland vorhanden sind. Den politisch Verantwortlichen wird durch die Publikation auch eine Hilfestellung und ein besserer Zugang zur ihrer regionalen Geschichts- und Gedenkkultur ermöglicht.
