The Hungarian Paintings - A European Search for Traces

In mid-May 1944, the systematic deportation and murder of the Jewish population in Hungary began. This was immediately followed by the looting and robbery of the property of Hungarian Jews. Entire convoys of lorries and trains carrying Hungarian property went west to the German Reich. One of the last transports reached the province of Salzburg in April 1945. US troops confiscated the contents of the train at the end of the war. Among the enormous quantities of valuables were 1,181 paintings. The American officer and art protection commissioner Evelyn Tucker had extensive inventory lists drawn up. On 5 January 1949, the 1,181 paintings were handed over to the Republic of Austria. In 1952, the paintings were stored in Altaussee, Salzburg and in 1968 they were handed over to employees of the Hungarian Embassy. Despite this handover to Hungarian authorities, at the instigation of Hungarian Jewish victims’ associations, an official enquiry was made to the Republic of Austria in October 1999 by an American commission of historians, appointed by then President Bill Clinton, about the whereabouts of the paintings. The project aims to shed light on the history and fate of these paintings.

Mitte Mai 1944 begann die systematische Deportation und Ermordung der jüdischen Bevölkerung in Ungarn. Unmittelbar danach folgten Plünderung und Raub des Vermögens der ungarischen Jüdinnen und Juden. Ganze Lastwagenkolonnen und Züge mit ungarischem Eigentum gingen nach Westen in das Deutsche Reich. Einer der letzten Transporte gelangte im April 1945 ins Bundesland Salzburg. US-Truppen beschlagnahmten zu Kriegsende den Inhalt des Zuges. Unter den ungeheuren Mengen an Wertsachen befanden sich auch 1.181 Gemälde. Die amerikanische Offizierin und Kunstschutzbeauftragte Evelyn Tucker ließ umfangreiche Inventurlisten anfertigen. Am 5. Jänner 1949 wurden die 1.181 Gemälde an die Republik Österreich übergeben. 1952 wurden die Gemälde im Altausseer Salzburg eingelagert und 1968 an Mitarbeiter der ungarischen Botschaft ausgefolgt. Trotz dieser Übergabe an ungarische Stellen wurde auf Betreiben von ungarischen jüdischen Opferverbänden im Oktober 1999 eine offizielle Anfrage einer amerikanischen Historikerkommission, die vom damaligen Präsidenten Bill Clinton eingesetzt wurde, an die Republik Österreich über den Verbleib der Gemälde gestellt. Im Projekt sollen die Geschichte und das Schicksal dieser Gemälde beleuchtet werden.
