Collected at any cost. Exhibition on provenance research at the Vienna Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art

Gesammelt um jeden Preis. Ausstellung zur Provenienzforschung im Volkskundemuseum Wien

 

At the centre of the project is an exhibition at the Vienna Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art, which, on the basis of its own history, and so also of the provenance research already carried out here and still to be carried out, arrives at general, understandable and comprehensible statements on provenance research in general, on its subject, its goals and methods. On the 25th anniversary of the Art Restitution Act, attention is redirected from artworks to cultural objects, from the “large”, often internationally negotiated restitution cases to the “small”, “everyday” cases, which ultimately accounted for the largest share of looted and confiscated property. In other words, these were objects that also entered the Vienna Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art in the years relevant to the Art Restitution Act because they were defined, valued and collected by – often Jewish – folklorists as “material folk culture” and/or “folk art”.

Im Zentrum des Projektes steht eine Ausstellung im Volkskundemuseum Wien, welche anhand der eigenen Geschichte, so auch der hier bereits geleisteten und noch zu leistenden Provenienzforschung, zu allgemeinen, verständlichen und nachvollziehbaren Aussagen zur Provenienzforschung generell, zu ihrem Gegenstand, ihren Zielen und Methoden, gelangt. Anlässlich des 25-jährigen Bestehens des Kunstrückgabegesetzes wird die Aufmerksamkeit von den Kunst- zu den Kulturgütern, von den „großen“, häufig international verhandelten Restitutionsfällen hin zu den „kleinen“, „alltäglichen“ Fällen gelenkt, die letztlich den größten Anteil an geraubtem und entzogenem Gut ausmachten. Es handelte sich also um solche Objekte, wie sie auch in den für das Kunstrückgabegesetz relevanten Jahren ins Volkskundemuseum gelangten, weil sie von - oftmals jüdischen – Volkskundlern und Volkskundlerinnen als „materielle Volkskultur“ und/oder „Volkskunst“ definiert, in Wert gesetzt und gesammelt wurden.
