Project

Description

The aim of the project is to examine the influence of antisemitism and Nazism, particularly with regard to the history and development of the Vienna Secession. Firstly, the period of Nazism in Germany and later also in Austria, as well as personal and aesthetic continuities in the Vienna Secession after 1945 will be examined. Based on the biographies of around 580 artists who appeared between 1898 and 1970, the project will take a nuanced look at the institutional history and fractures of the Vienna Secession and at individual behaviour in dealing with authoritarian, dictatorial or ultimately totalitarian regimes.
