Female Homosexuality in National Socialist Austria. Stigmatisation and Persecution of Homosexual Women.

On the one hand, the research project aims to statistically analyse the persecution situation of women in the Nazi era throughout Austria. On the other hand, the focus is on a qualitative analysis of the approximately 50 court files kept in the Austrian provincial archives that concern women accused under Sec. 129Ib of the Criminal Code. Accordingly, the project involves extensive research as well as digitisation work in the Carinthian, Lower Austrian, Upper Austrian, Styrian, Tyrolean and Vorarlberg provincial archives. The analysis of the court records is also accompanied by questions about the events following the conviction of a person as well as the situation in concentration camps, but also the perpetrator side. However, the main focus of the project is to document the individual fates of these Nazi victims, who have largely been ignored so far, as well as to provide as comprehensive an account as possible of the persecution to which homosexual women were subjected under the Nazi regime. The project expects to find around 150 women's fates.

Das angestrebte Forschungsprojekt setzt sich einerseits zum Ziel, die Verfolgungssituation von Frauen in der NS-Zeit in ganz Österreich statistisch aufzuarbeiten. Andererseits steht eine qualitative Analyse der rund 50 in den österreichischen Landesarchiven aufbewahrten Gerichtsakten, die nach § 129Ib StG angeklagte Frauen betreffen, im Mittelpunkt. Dementsprechend ist das Projekt mit umfassenden Recherchen sowie Digitalisierungsarbeiten im Kärntner, Niederösterreichischen, Oberösterreichischen, Steiermärkischen, Tiroler und Vorarlberger Landesarchiv verbunden. Mit der Analyse der Gerichtsakten gehen auch Fragen rund um die Ereignisse nach der Verurteilung einer Person sowie der Situation in Konzentrationslagern, aber auch einer Täter:innenschaft einher. Im Mittelpunkt des Projektes steht allerdings vor allem die Dokumentation der Einzelschicksale dieser bisher noch kaum beachteten NS-Opfer sowie eine möglichst umfassende Darstellung der Verfolgungssituation homosexueller Frauen im Nationalsozialismus. Das Projekt rechnet mit rund 150 Frauenschicksalen.
