Die Unbekannten – Österreichische Exilanten als Kommandosoldaten der britischen Streitkräfte im Zweiten Weltkrieg

Project

Description

During the Second World War, the British Army set up its own unit, the No. 10 Inter-Allied Commando, to give members of other nations the opportunity to fight against the Axis powers. Under the umbrella of this special command there was also a contingent of German-speaking refugees, of whom just under half - estimated at around forty people - came from Austria. The tasks of these specialists, who were trained in Wales under the most grueling conditions, included special missions, enemy reconnaissance and obtaining information about the enemy, for example by interrogating prisoners of war. Despite their sometimes spectacular and dangerous deployment in the fight against Fascism, the fate of these exiles has been virtually unknown in their former homeland until now. The project aims to change this, to give them a face and to inscribe their wartime and exile experiences, including their role in the defeat of the Nazi regime, in the Austrian culture of remembrance. The presentation of the project results as well as the launch of the interactive project portal will take place at an event commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Austria.
