Despite being over 80 years ago, the Spanish Civil War has lost none of its fascination and explosive power. There are many reasons for this lasting interest in this striking turning point in contemporary European history. The Spanish Civil War was and is rightly classified as a prequel to the Second World War. No other military conflict (beyond the world wars, of course) claimed such a high number of lives in Europe during the 20th century (about 600,000). Largely unexplored, however, is the period after the civil war. This book closes this gap in the research – at least with regard to the fates of Austrian fighters in Spain. This study, which was completed by the renowned Austrian historian Hans Schafranek shortly before his death (13 October 2022), is largely based on unpublished archival sources and oral history testimonies, which underlines the fact that the book largely breaks new historiographical ground. These interviews with Austrian participants in the Spanish Civil War, which are frequently cited in the manuscript, were for the most part conducted by Hans Schafranek between 1982 and 1985. In some cases the interviews lasted up to 25 hours (Josef Meisel, Lajos Falusi, Hans Scheifele, Karl Bauer, Bruno Furch, Emanuel Edel). Without exception, all the Spanienkämpfer interviewed have died in the meantime, so that their memoirs and testimonies of the times have a special additional value. With a few exceptions, the interviews are available in transcribed form (almost 7,000 typewritten pages). The content of these 46 interviews is systematically analysed here for the first time - in the context of overarching questions of contemporary history for the period from 1939 to 1945. They form the central source basis of this book, which traces the life stages of Austrian fighters in Spain in an exciting and dense form: Living conditions, political organisation and cultural activities in the French internment camps 1939-1942; the fates of Spanienkämpfer in the Foreign Legion and the labour companies, in the prisons and camps of the Franco regime; the struggle in the underground as well as in the French Résistance. For many, the anti-Fascist struggle ended with their murder in the concentration camps of the Nazi regime.

Trotz der über 80-jährigen zeitlichen Distanz hat der Spanische Bürgerkrieg bis heute nichts von seiner Faszination und Brisanz verloren. Dieses nachhaltige Interesse an diesem markanten Einschnitt der europäischen Zeitgeschichte hat viele Gründe. Zurecht wurde und wird der Spanische Bürgerkrieg als Vorgeschichte des Zweiten Weltkriegs klassifiziert. Kein anderer militärischer Konflikt (jenseits der Weltkriege natürlich) forderte in Europa während des 20. Jahrhunderts eine derartig hohe Anzahl an Todesopfern (etwa 600.000). Weitgehend unerforscht hingegen ist die Periode nach dem Bürgerkrieg. Diese Forschungslücke schließt dieses Buch - auf jeden Fall in Hinblick auf die Schicksale österreichischer Spanienkämpfer. Die vorliegende Studie, die der namhafte österreichische Historiker Hans Schafranek noch kurz vor seinem Tod (13. Oktober 2022) fertigstellte, stützt sich zum größten Teil auf unveröffentlichte Archivquellen und Oral-History-Zeugnisse, was den Umstand unterstreicht, dass mit dem Buch weitestgehend historiografisches Neuland betreten wird. Diese im Manuskript häufig zitierten Interviews mit österreichischen TeilnehmerInnen des Spanischen Bürgerkriegs wurden von Hans Schafranek zum größten Teil bereits in den Jahren 1982 bis 1985 durchgeführt. In manchen Fällen dauerten die Interviews bis zu 25 Stunden (Josef Meisel, Lajos Falusi, Hans Scheifele, Karl Bauer, Bruno Furch, Emanuel Edel). Ausnahmslos alle interviewten Spanienkämpfer sind mittlerweile verstorben, so dass ihren Lebenserinnerungen und Zeit-Zeugnissen ein besonderer zusätzlicher Wert zukommt. Bis auf wenige Ausnahmen liegen die Interviews in transkribierter Form vor (annähernd 7.000 maschinschriftliche Seiten). Diese 46 Interviews werden inhaltlich – im Kontext übergeordneter zeitgeschichtlicher Fragestellungen für den Zeitraum von 1939 bis 1945 - hier erstmals systematisch ausgewertet. Sie bilden die zentrale Quellenbasis dieses Buches, das die Lebensstationen österreichischer Spanienkämpfer in spannender und dichter Form nachzeichnet: Lebensverhältnisse, politische Organisation und kulturelle Aktivitäten in den französischen Internierungslagern 1939-1942; die Schicksale von Spanienkämpfern in der Fremdenlegion und den Prestataires-Kompanien, in den Gefängnissen und Lagern des Franco-Regimes; der Kampf im Untergrund sowie in der französischen Résistance. Für viele endete der antifaschistische Kampf mit ihrer Ermordung in den Konzentrationslagern des NS-Regimes.
