Selfhelp Community Services, Inc. (Selfhelp) has operated the largest Holocaust survivor programme (HSP) in North America since 1936, as part of their mission to serve victims of Nazi persecution as the “last surviving relative”. Selfhelp serves 5,400 Holocaust survivors, 106 of whom are from Austria. Selfhelp is also involved in Holocaust awareness initiatives to ensure that the history and memory of the Holocaust is not forgotten. These include the Witness Theatre Project, an intergenerational programme that brings high school students and survivors together to remember the stories of the Holocaust; social media campaigns; and in-person and virtual talks for survivors at synagogues, schools and other organisations.
