Das Mahnmal "Mühlviertler Hasenjagd" in Schwertberg

 

Since 1995 there has been a memorial in Schwertberg called “Life means Respecting Life” by the artists Ingrid Steininger and Christian Reisinger at the market town hall, which commemorates the “Mühlviertel Rabbit Hunt” in February 1945, when about 500 mainly Soviet prisoners escaped from Mauthausen concentration camp and a merciless persecution of the fugitives began. The memorial commemorates the escape, the seven Russian prisoners of war who were shot in the courtyard of the municipal office, and the help of the Langthaler family from Schwertberg who rescued two Russian officers. In 2023, the time has come for the existing memorial to be moved to another side of the municipal office. This process is to be used to raise awareness of the topic and the reappraisal of history in the community. When the memorial is opened at its new location, it will be commemorated with a ceremony. A plaque in German/English will be installed to provide information. It will be linked to the homepage of the Municipality of Schwertberg and the Mauthausen concentration camp memorial so that visitors can find out more about the topic.

Seit 1995 gibt es in Schwertberg ein Mahnmal "Leben ist Leben achten" der Künstlerin Ingrid Steininger und des Künstlers Christian Reisinger beim Marktgemeindeamt, welches an die "Mühlviertler Hasenjagd" im Februar 1945 erinnert, bei dem ca. 500 hauptsächlich sowjetische Häftlinge aus dem Konzentrationslager Mauthausen ausgebrochen sind und eine gnadenlose Verfolgung der Flüchtigen eingesetzt hat. Das Mahnmal erinnert an die Flucht, an die sieben russischen Kriegsgefangenen, die im Hof des Gemeindeamtes erschossen wurden, und an die Hilfe der Familie Langthaler aus Schwertberg, die zwei russische Offiziere gerettet hat. 2023 ist es nun soweit, dass das bestehende Mahnmal an eine andere Seite des Gemeindeamtes übersiedelt werden kann. Dieser Prozess soll dazu genutzt werden, das Thema und die Aufarbeitung der Geschichte in der Gemeinde bewusst zu machen. Bei der Eröffnung des Mahnmals am neuen Standort soll mit einer Feier gedacht werden. Eine Tafel in Deutsch/Englisch wird angebracht und soll Information darüber geben. Verlinkt mit der Homepage der Gemeinde Schwertberg und der KZ-Gedenkstätte Mauthausen, können sich Besucher*innen über das Thema näher informieren.
