Project

Description

From May 1943 to April 1944, the orphanage in Izieu (80 km from Lyon) accommodated over one hundred Jewish children of various nationalities whose parents had already been deported by the Nazis. By being taken in by d’Izieu, the children had the chance to escape the anti-Semitic persecution, at least for the time being. Since 1944, the Maison d’Izieu has been a memorial which was inaugurated by President Francois Mitterand as one of his “Grands traveaux”. The curated photo exhibition shows children and their carers during their stay at Izieu. They are happy pictures with happy children. The knowledge of their cruel murder is as such rendered even more painful.
