Internationales Symposium Anni und Otto Binder: Widerstand – KZ – Exil – Rückkehr

 

In January 2010, Otto Binder would have turned 100. To mark the occasion, in memory of its honorary member, the Austrian Society for Exile Research held a symposium which dealt with the life and work of Otto Binder and that of his wife, Anni Binder, in close detail. Otto Binder is one of the few Austrians who returned from exile to Austria after 1945 and was able to continue with his professional success prior to the persecution and exile. Requested to return by the Wiener Städtische insurance company a few years after the Second World War, as its later General Director, he became a key figure in Austrian economic and public life. The findings of the symposium, which also deal with Anni and Otto Binder’s exile in Sweden, also served as preparatory work for an international symposium spanning several day on Austrian exile in Scandinavia. Its results and the contributions from the Binder symposium were published in its series of publications “Exile Research Today” (Mandelbaum publishers).

Im Jänner jährt sich Otto Binders Geburtstag zum 100. Mal. Aus diesem Anlass setzt sich die Österreichische Gesellschaft für Exilforschung in Erinnerung an ihr Ehrenmitglied in einem Symposium eingehend mit dessen Leben und Werk sowie dem seiner Frau Anni Binder auseinander. Otto Binder ist einer jener wenigen Österreicher, die nach 1945 aus dem Exil zurückkehrten und an ihre berufliche Karriere vor ihrer Verfolgung und Vertreibung anknüpfen konnten. Von der Wiener Städtischen Versicherung wenige Jahre nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs zur Rückkehr aufgefordert, wurde er als deren späterer Generaldirektor zu einer wichtigen Persönlichkeit im wirtschaftlichen und öffentlichen Leben Österreichs. Die Erkenntnisse des Symposiums, das in diesem Zusammenhang auch auf Anni und Otto Binders Exil in Schweden eingeht, dienen darüber hinaus als Vorarbeit für ein mehrtägiges internationales Symposium zum österreichischen Exil in Skandinavien. Dessen Ergebnisse und die Beiträge des Binder-Symposiums werden von der Österreichischen Gesellschaft für Exilforschung in ihrer Buchreihe „Exilforschung heute“ (Mandelbaum Verlag) veröffentlicht.
