The Journey of Hitler's Paintings – Cultural Policy, Art Trade, Warehousing and Salvage in the Salzkammergut during the Nazi Era

Die Reise der Bilder Hitlers Kulturpolitik, Kunsthandel, Einlagerungen und Bergungen in der NS-Zeit im Salzkammergut

 

The exhibition is on the trail of pictures that were collected, stored, looted, aryanised, (forcibly) sold, moved or rescued in the Salzkammergut during the Second World War. The artworks’ path around the world represents the continuation of the “journey”. The project is part of the official programme of the Capital of Culture Salzkammergut 2024 and functions as an important transnational project with a focus on Austria (Linz / Salzkammergut) – Italy – Germany – Netherlands – France. The project also builds a direct bridge to the Salzkammergut with two “outposts”. The Kammerhof Museum in Bad Aussee is dedicated to the life and work of the Berlin art dealer Wolfgang Gurlitt and his Jewish business partner Lilly Christiansen, who lived in Bad Aussee from 1940. And in Lauffen near Bad Ischl, works and installations by contemporary artists are used to explore the systematic theft of art, which has been a well-known phenomenon since antiquity and a means of legitimising cultural dominance.

Die Ausstellung begibt sich exemplarisch auf die Suche nach Bildern, die im Zweiten Weltkrieg im Salzkammergut gesammelt, eingelagert, geraubt, arisiert, zwangsverkauft, verschoben, verkauft oder gerettet wurden. Die Wege der Kunstwerke in die ganze Welt stellen die Fortsetzung der "Reise" dar. Das Projekt ist Teil des offiziellen Programms der Kulturhauptstadt Salzkammergut 2024 und fungiert als wichtiges länderübergreifendes Projekt mit den Schwerpunkten Österreich (Linz / Salzkammergut) – Italien – Deutschland – Niederlande – Frankreich. Das Projekt baut mit zwei "Außenstellen" außerdem eine direkte Brücke in das Salzkammergut. Im Kammerhofmuseum Bad Aussee werden Leben und Wirken des Berliner Kunsthändlers Wolfgang Gurlitt und seiner jüdischen Geschäftspartnerin Lilly Christiansen, die ab 1940 in Bad Aussee lebten, behandelt. Und in Lauffen bei Bad Ischl wird anhand von Werken und Installationen zeitgenössischer Künstler:innen der systematische Kunstraub thematisiert, der seit der Antike ein bekanntes Phänomen und ein Mittel zur Legitimation kultureller Dominanz darstellt.
