Inspired by the globally celebrated 150th birthday of Arnold Schönberg, the new exhibition at the University of Music and Performing Arts’ Exilarte Centre sheds light on the social and cultural environment of the founder of the Second Viennese School. In particular, the focus will be on Alexander von Zemlinsky, who taught Schönberg and introduced him to Viennese musical circles, as well as on Schönberg's student and later assistant Richard Hoffmann, whose estate has recently been placed in the Exilarte Centre’s archive. These three personalities, their professional, friendly and musical connections as well as their fates during the Nazi regime are brought closer together by means of life documents, photos and music manuscripts. “Triangle of the Viennese Tradition” is the title of the connection between three musicians who shared a similar fate as composers, teachers and friends: They were of Jewish origin and thus ostracised and exiled. The project results are an event: opening of the exhibition, an exhibition, a 360° video tour through the exhibition and a catalogue of the exhibition.

Inspiriert vom weltweit gefeierten 150. Geburtstag von Arnold Schönberg beleuchtet die neue Ausstellung im Exilarte Zentrum der mdw das gesellschaftliche und kulturelle Umfeld des Begründers der Zweiten Wiener Schule. Im Besonderen wird das Augenmerk sowohl auf Alexander von Zemlinsky, der Schönberg unterrichtete und ihn in die Wiener Musikkreise einführte, sowie auf den Schönberg-Schüler und späteren Assistenten Richard Hoffmann gerichtet, dessen Nachlass sich seit Kurzem im Archiv des Exilarte Zentrums befindet. Diese drei Persönlichkeiten, ihre berufliche, freundschaftliche und musikalische Verbindung sowie deren Schicksale während der Zeit des NS-Regimes werden anhand von Lebensdokumenten, Fotos und Notenmanuskripten nähergebracht. „Triangel der Wiener Tradition“ betitelt die Verbindung dreier Musiker, die als Komponisten, Pädagogen und Freunde ein ähnliches Schicksal teilten: Sie waren jüdischer Herkunft und somit Verfemte und Verbannte. Projektergebnisse sind eine Veranstaltung: Eröffnung der Ausstellung, eine Ausstellung, eine 360° Videotour durch die Ausstellung und ein Katalog der Ausstellung.
