Twenty-five years of provenance research at the Wien Museum are the starting point for a double exhibition entitled “Looting” at the Wien Museum and the Jewish Museum Vienna. From a conceptual point of view, it is inevitable that the focus will initially be on the prehistory that is fundamental to restitution, i.e. expropriation and looting. For this double exhibition, the Wien Museum, which today represents only a part of the municipal collections, becomes a kind of historical site of incorporation, while the Jewish Museum Vienna becomes a symbolic site for the thousands of Viennese flats and houses owned by people who were considered “Jews” under the Nuremberg Laws, whose inventory was plundered by various organisations and private individuals out of greed and opportunism. The exhibition concept therefore envisages showing the same objects at the two exhibition venues during the process of confiscation or appropriation. In order to allow visitors to the exhibition to experience the act of looting and incorporation through their senses, 12 films will be produced showing how objects are packed on one side and unpacked on the other.

25 Jahre Provenienzforschung am Wien Museum sind der Ausgangspunkt für eine Doppelausstellung mit dem Titel „Raub“ im Wien Museum und im Jüdischen Museum Wien. Konzeptuell gesehen ist es unausweichlich, den Fokus zunächst auf die für eine Rückgabe grundlegende Vorgeschichte, also Raub und Beraubung, zu legen. Für diese Doppelausstellung wird das Wien Museum, das heute nur einen Teil der Städtischen Sammlungen darstellt, quasi zum historischen Ort der Einverleibung, das Jüdische Museum Wien zum symbolischen Ort für die Tausenden Wiener Wohnungen und Häuser im Besitz von Menschen, die nach den Nürnberger Gesetzen als „Jüdinnen“ bzw. „Juden“ galten, deren Inventar von den verschiedensten Organisationen und von Privatleuten aus Gier und aus Anlass der guten Gelegenheit geplündert wurde. Das Ausstellungskonzept sieht deshalb vor, an den zwei Ausstellungsorten dieselben Objekte während des Vorgangs des Entzugs bzw. der Aneignung zu zeigen. Um nun die Handlung des Raubens sowie der Einverleibung für die Ausstellungsbesucher:innen sinnlich erfahrbar zu machen, werden 12 Filme hergestellt, in denen zu sehen ist, wie Objekte auf der einen Seite eingepackt und auf der anderen Seite ausgepackt werden.
