The archaeological remains in Nazi concentration camps and extermination sites

Die archäologischen Hinterlassenschaften in nationalsozialistischen Konzentrationslagern und Vernichtungsorten

 

In the proposed project, the finds from selected concentration camps (Mauthausen, Flossenbürg, Ravensbrück) and extermination centres (Sobibor, Belzec) as well as the Nazi “euthanasia” killing centre Hartheim will be compared with and contextualised, taking into account their specific frameworks. It is essential to strictly observe the framework conditions for the collections of finds at the different locations. Which object groups and objects only exist in concentration camps, which are known exclusively from the Hartheim Nazi euthanasia killing centre and which objects can only be found at extermination centres? Which objects are typical of concentration camps apart from the homemade items mentioned? Further analyses concern the question of whether and how the mentioned instructions were followed. Questions are also asked about what objects are missing, but what would actually be expected. With regard to the extermination centres, it can be assumed that some of the items were looted by various Nazi organisations. In the case of the Nazi euthanasia killing centre, it is necessary to investigate which categories of finds are characteristic here.

In dem beantragten Projekt sollen die Funde aus ausgewählten Konzentrationslagern (Mauthausen, Flossenbürg, Ravensbrück) und Vernichtungszentren (Sobibor, Belzec) sowie der NS-Euthanasietötungsanstalt Hartheim unter Berücksichtigung der spezifischen Rahmenbedingungen kontextualisierend miteinander verglichen werden. Essentiell ist die stringente Beachtung der Rahmenbedingungen für die Fundassemblagen an den unterschiedlichen Orten. Welche Objektgruppen und Objekte kommen nur in Konzentrationslagern vor, welche sind ausschließlich aus der NS-Euthanasietötungsanstalt Hartheim bekannt und welche Gegenstände lassen sich nur an Vernichtungszentren finden? Welche Objekte sind neben den genannten selbstgemachten Dingen für Konzentrationslager typisch? Weitere Analysen betreffen die Frage, ob und wie die genannten Anweisungen befolgt wurden. Gefragt wird zudem, was an Objekten fehlt, was aber eigentlich zu erwarten wäre. In Bezug auf die Vernichtungszentren ist davon auszugehen, dass ein Teil der Dinge von verschiedenen NS-Organisationen geraubt wurde. Bei der NS-Euthanasietötungsanstalt ist zu untersuchen, welche Fundkategorien hier charakteristisch sind.
