The “March of the Living” project is an annual educational programme that brings young people and students from all over the world to Poland to learn more about the history of the Holocaust and its roots. Since the first “March of the Living” in 1988, more than 250,000 young people from all over the world have taken part in the march from Auschwitz to Birkenau. This takes place annually on “Yom Hashoah”, Holocaust Remembrance Day, and is a silent tribute to all victims of the Holocaust. The “March of the Living” is intended to provide a clear contrast to the death marches that began towards the end of the Second World War. The Nazis forced around 750,000 prisoners onto these death marches under the harshest and most inhumane conditions. Almost half of the prisoners were Jews. The “March of the Living” sends a clear sign against forgetting, of hope and shows living, young and active Judaism. The project is not just about taking part in the march, it is a holistic Holocaust education programme.

Das Projekt "March of the Living" ist ein jährliches Erziehungsprogramm, welches Jugendliche und Studierende aus der ganzen Welt nach Polen bringt und dort vereint, um mehr über die Geschichte des Holocaust und ihre Wurzeln zu erfahren. Seit dem ersten "March of the Living" im Jahre 1988 haben bereits mehr als 250.000 Jugendliche aus der ganzen Welt am Marsch von Auschwitz nach Birkenau teilgenommen. Dieser findet jährlich am „Yom Hashoah“, dem Holocaust-Gedenktag, statt und ist ein stiller Tribut an alle Opfer des Holocaust. Der „March of the Living“ soll einen klaren Kontrast zu den Todesmärschen, welche gegen Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs begannen, darstellen. Die Nazis zwangen rund 750.000 Häftlinge unter härtesten und unmenschlichen Bedingungen auf diese Todesmärsche. Fast die Hälfte der Häftlinge waren Juden und Jüdinnen. Der „March of the Living“ ist ein klares Zeichen gegen das Vergessen, der Hoffnung und zeigt lebendiges, junges und aktives Judentum. Das Projekt besteht nicht nur aus der Teilnahme am Marsch, vielmehr ist es ein gesamtheitliches Holocaust-Education-Programm.
