Artistic design at the old Jewish cemetery in Pernerstorferstraße in St. Pölten

The approximately eighty-metre-long fence between the cemetery and the public space will be replaced by 116 glass panels printed with information. The all-round glass panels link the view of the site to the printed content, which clearly outlines the area from afar, both spatially and substantially. At the same time, the transparent glass has the effect of visually opening up the area to the outside and making it visible, which is further enhanced by thinning out the shrubs along Pernerstorferstrasse. The new insight into the site, which looks like a quiet garden, is intended to entice passers-by to pause and approach. For passers-by, the view through the glass panes and thus also the information about the buried, with the indication that or when they were buried here, clearly characterises the site as a cemetery.

Konkret wird der rund achtzig Meter lange Gitterzaun zwischen Friedhof und öffentlichem Raum durch 116 Glasscheiben ersetzt, die mit diesen Informationen bedruckt sind. Durch die rundum laufenden Glasplatten wird der Blick auf das Gelände an die gedruckten Inhalte gekoppelt, die den Bereich weithin sichtbar sowohl räumlich als auch substanziell klar umreißen. Zugleich bewirkt das transparente Glas, dass das Areal optisch nach außen geöffnet und einsichtig gemacht wird, was durch Auslichten der Sträucher entlang der Pernerstorferstraße weiter verbessert wird. Der so geschaffene neue Einblick in das wie ein stiller Garten anmutende Gelände soll Vorbeigehende dazu verführen, innezuhalten und sich zu nähern. Der Blick durch die Glasscheiben und damit auch auf die Angaben zu den Beerdigten mit dem Verweis, dass bzw. wann diese hier begraben wurden, charakterisiert den Ort für Passanten eindeutig als Friedhof.
