With this project, the Austrian Jewish Museum in Eisenstadt is aiming to digitise its extensive museum collection and record it in a structured database. The first stage of the project involves the digitisation and recording of the 755 “Jahrzeittafel” remembrance plaques currently installed in the museum's synagogue in order to create an easily accessible and comprehensive source of historical information. “Jahrzeittafel” remembrance plaques are used to track the period of mourning of a deceased person and are usually displayed in the synagogue in the period around the anniversary of the deceased's death (“Jahrzeit”). At the same time, the digitisation is a sustainable measure to continue of the museum's work on the history of the Jewish community of Eisenstadt, which was destroyed in the Shoah. It can also serve as a starting point for genealogical research and is therefore of interest to descendants of former residents, too.

Das Österreichische Jüdische Museum in Eisenstadt setzt sich mit dem hier beantragten Projekt zum Ziel, seinen umfangreichen musealen Bestand zu digitalisieren und in einer strukturierten Datenbank zu erfassen. Die erste Stufe des Projekts umfasst die Digitalisierung und Erfassung der 755 Jahrzeittafeln, die derzeit in der Synagoge des Museums installiert sind, um eine leicht zugängliche und umfassende Ressource für historische Informationen zu schaffen. Jahrzeittafeln dienen dazu, die Zeit der Trauer eines Verstorbenen zu verfolgen, und werden gewöhnlich zur „Jahrzeit“ (Zeitraum um den Todestag des Verstorbenen) in der Synagoge sichtbar aufgehängt. Zugleich ist gegenständliche Digitalisierung eine nachhaltige Maßnahme in der Fortführung der musealen Bearbeitung der Geschichte der in der Shoa zerstörten jüdischen Gemeinde Eisenstadt. Sie kann ebenso als Ausgangspunkt für genealogische Forschungen dienen und ist somit nicht zuletzt für Nachfahren ehemaliger Einwohner:innen von Interesse.
