As a result of years of work carried out by the Director of the District Museum Vienna-Landstraße, Prof. Karl Hauer, around 13,400 people from the 3rd District were identified as victims of the Shoah and listed in a computer database. The project took this as a basis and wanted to bring the important outcome closer to a wider public. Memorial plaques were installed in the pavement in front of selected buildings in which Jewish religious, social or cultural institutions were based or victims of the Shoah lived. In doing so, the victims of the Shoah were to be given a symbolic new home in the district where they lived.

Durch die langjährige Arbeit des Leiters des Bezirksmuseums Wien-Landstraße, Herrn Prof. Karl Hauer, wurden ca. 13.400 Personen als Opfer der Shoah aus dem dritten Wiener Gemeindebezirk identifiziert und in einer Computer-Datenbank erfasst. Das Projekt schließt an diese Grundlage an und will wichtige Ergebnisse einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit nahe bringen. Vor ausgewählten Gebäuden in welchen bis 1938 jüdische religiöse, soziale oder kulturelle Institutionen existierten oder Opfer der Shoa wohnten, werden Gedenktafeln in die Gehsteige eingelassen. Damit soll symbolisch den Opfern der Shoa wieder eine Heimat in ihrem Wohnbezirk gegeben werden.
