Memorial to Ebensee's Nazi victims and expelled and murdered Jewish citizens

Although the market town of Ebensee has kept the memory of the concentration camp victims present in the memorial site for decades, the fact that numerous men and women from Ebensee were murdered and expelled for political reasons, because of their Jewish origins and as victims of Nazi euthanasia has not been mentioned until now. There is no memorial in the town centre to commemorate these victims. The Capital of Culture 2024 offers the opportunity to make up for this lack of remembrance. The municipal council has spoken out in favour of the forecourt at the municipal office, which has a high visitor frequency and will be enhanced by the memorial. The names of the victims and displaced persons are to be regarded as an integral part of the memorial.

Obwohl die Marktgemeinde Ebensee die Erinnerung an die KZ-Opfer in der Gedenkstätte seit Jahrzehnten präsent hält, wurde die Tatsache, dass zahlreiche Ebenseer Männer und Frauen aus politischen Gründen, wegen ihrer jüdischen Herkunft und als Opfer der NS-Euthanasie ermordet und vertrieben wurden, bisher nicht erwähnt. Es fehlt ein Denkmal im Ortszentrum, das auch an diese Opfer erinnert. Die Kulturhauptstadt 2024 bietet die Gelegenheit, dieses erinnerungspolitische Defizit aufzuholen. Der Gemeinderat hat sich für den Vorplatz am Gemeindeamt ausgesprochen, der eine hohe Besucherfrequenz aufweist und durch das Denkmal eine Aufwertung erfahren wird. Die Namen der Opfer und Vertriebenen sind als integraler Bestandteil des Denkmals anzusehen.
