Josef Frank: Die Friedenskonferenz - Die vier Freiheiten

 

During his emigration - after the mid-1930s - Josef Frank was only able to publish a few texts. Following the publication of the volume “Betrachtungen über die Kunst unserer Zeit” (Reflections on the Art of Our Time) in November 2023, Josef Frank’s second previously unrealised book project is now being realised: “Die Friedenskonferenz - Die Vier Freiheiten”. Under the titles "The Four Freedoms" and "The Peace Conference" by Josef Frank (whereby the English title refers to a version that Frank was aiming to have published in the American-speaking world), there are two political-literary manuscript collections by Frank dealing with war and the post-war order, totalling around 660,000 characters. These two satires and fantastic novels were written during the Second World War in the early 1940s and exist in several manuscript and typescript versions with handwritten corrections by Frank in German and partly in English. Since Josef Frank's two works – “The Peace Conference” and “The History of the Second Thirty Years’ War” - overlap thematically and in terms of content, an overlapping editorial treatment is now necessary and sensible.

In der Emigration – nach Mitte der 1930er Jahre – konnte Josef Frank nur mehr vereinzelt Texte veröffentlichen. Nach dem im November 2023 erschienenen Band „Betrachtungen über die Kunst unserer Zeit“ wird nun das zweite bislang nicht umgesetzte Buchprojekt Josef Franks realisiert: „Die Friedenskonferenz – Die Vier Freiheiten“. Unter den Titeln „The Four Freedoms“ by Josef Frank und „The Peace Conference“ (wobei die englische Titelgebung auf eine von Frank angepeilte Publikation im amerikanischen Sprachraum verweist) gibt es zwei thematisch Krieg und Nachkriegsordnung behandelnde politisch-literarische Manuskriptbestände Franks im Umfang von circa 660.000 Zeichen. Diese beiden Satiren bzw. Phantastischen Romane sind noch während des 2. Weltkrieges Anfang der 1940er Jahre entstanden und in mehreren Manuskript- und Typoskript-Fassungen mit handschriftlichen Korrekturen Franks auf Deutsch bzw. teilweise auf Englisch vorhanden. Da die beiden Werke Josef Franks – „Die Friedenskonferenz“ und „Die Geschichte des zweiten dreißigjährigen Krieges“ sich thematisch und inhaltlich überlappen ist nun eine überschneidende Bearbeitung notwendig und sinnvoll.
