The First Austrian Cripple Labour Association and the National Socialist Reich Association of the Physically Disabled in the Ostmark

Die Erste Österreichische Krüppelarbeitsgemeinschaft und der NS-Reichsbund der Körperbehinderten in der Ostmark

 

This project examines the history of the First Austrian “Cripple Labour Association” from 1926 until its dissolution in 1938 and its integration into the Nazi Reich Association of the “physically disabled” as well as its re-establishment in 1946 until its final dissolution in 1948. While the extermination of people with disabilities during the Nazi era has been historically examined, the self-organisation of people who did not incur their disabilities during the war has been largely ignored. The aim of the project is to search archives for relevant documents that shed light on the history of the "“Cripple Labour Association” and the Nazi Reich Association in the Ostmark. Publications, a travelling exhibition and several presentation events are planned. Key findings are also to be published in easy-to-understand language.

Das vorliegende Projekt untersucht die Geschichte der Ersten Österreichischen "Krüppelarbeitsgemeinschaft" von 1926 bis zu ihrer Auflösung 1938 und ihrer Integration in den NS-Reichsbund der "Körperbehinderten" sowie ihrer Wiedergründung 1946 bis zur endgültigen Auflösung 1948. Während die Vernichtung von Menschen mit Behinderungen in der NS-Zeit historisch aufgearbeitet wurde, blieb die Selbst-Organisationen von Menschen, die ihre Beeinträchtigungen nicht im Krieg erlitten, bisher noch weitgehend unbeachtet. Ziel des Projekts ist es, in Archiven nach relevanten Dokumenten zu suchen, die die Geschichte der "Krüppelarbeitsgemeinschaft" und des NS-Reichsbunds in der Ostmark beleuchten. Geplant sind Publikationen, eine Wanderausstellung und mehrere Präsentationsveranstaltungen. Zentrale Erkenntnisse sollen auch in leicht verständlicher Sprache veröffentlicht werden.
