The building of the former synagogue in Steyr is the only surviving one in Upper Austria from the period before 1938. It is to be transformed into a place of learning about historical and contemporary Jewish life, where research can be conducted and knowledge imparted. Together with existing places of remembrance and learning such as the Jewish cemetery and the Tunnels of Remembrance, a unique landscape of remembrance in Austria would be created in Steyr. The project is entitled “Learning Centre Synagogue” and is set to go into permanent operation after its planned opening in April 2026. In the first phase of the project, extensive research will be carried out into the content, which will form the basis for the subsequent exhibition and all cultural education programmes. Extensive preliminary design work is also necessary in this phase in order to convey the content effectively. The aim is to create an authentic place of learning that not only offers individual visitors access to Jewish history and Jewish life in rural areas, but is also particularly attractive to young people in a school context.

Das Gebäude der ehemaligen Synagoge in Steyr ist das einzige erhaltene in Oberösterreich aus der Zeit vor 1938. Es soll zu einem Lernort für historisches und gegenwärtiges jüdisches Leben umgewandelt werden, an dem Forschung betrieben und Wissen vermittelt werden können. Zusammen mit bestehenden Gedenk- und Lernorten wie dem Jüdischen Friedhof und dem Stollen der Erinnerung würde in Steyr eine einzigartige Erinnerungslandschaft in Österreich entstehen. Das Projekt trägt den Titel „Lernort Synagoge“ und soll nach der geplanten Eröffnung im April 2026 in den Dauerbetrieb übergehen. In der ersten Projektphase werden umfangreiche inhaltliche Recherchen durchgeführt, die die Grundlage für die spätere Ausstellung und alle Kulturvermittlungsangebote bilden. Um die Inhalte gut vermitteln zu können, sind in dieser Phase auch umfangreiche gestalterische Vorarbeiten notwendig. Ziel ist es, einen authentischen Lernort zu schaffen, der nicht nur Individualbesucher:innen Zugang zur jüdischen Geschichte und zum jüdischen Leben im ländlichen Raum bietet, sondern vor allem für junge Menschen im schulischen Kontext attraktiv ist.
