The return of Beit Jakov

 

The Beit Yaakov movement, a Jewish girls' school organisation, was founded by the Jewish educator Sarah Schenirer. The first school opened in 1917, followed by a teacher training college in Krakow in 1920. The movement spread rapidly. The Beit Yaakov School in Vienna continues to operate in Austria. A commemorative event is scheduled to honour the 90th anniversary of Sarah Schenirer's passing. As part of this event, schoolgirls from Vienna will travel to Krakow to visit the original teacher training college and commemorate all those schoolgirls who were murdered in the Shoah. As descendants of Shoah survivors and current pupils of the Beit Yaakov School, their participation will be a special form of remembrance.

Die Beit-Yaakov-Bewegung, eine jüdische Mädchenschulorganisation, wurde von der jüdischen Pädagogin Sarah Schenirer ins Leben gerufen. Die erste Schule wurde 1917 eröffnet, das Lehrerseminar folgte 1920 in Krakau. Die Bewegung breitete sich rasch aus. In Österreich existiert nach wie vor die Beit-Yaakov-Schule in Wien. Anlässlich des 90. Todestags von Sarah Schenirer ist eine Gedenkveranstaltung geplant. Im Rahmen dieser Veranstaltung reisen Schülerinnen aus Wien nach Krakau, um das ursprüngliche Seminar zu besuchen und all jener Schülerinnen zu gedenken, die in der Shoah ermordet wurden. Als Nachkommen von Shoah-Überlebenden und heutige Schülerinnen der Beit-Yaakov-Schule wird ihre Teilnahme eine besondere Form der Erinnerung darstellen.
