A critical scientific inventory of the relevant Austrian museum landscape pertaining to contemporary history did not exist. The overwhelming majority of the contributions collected in the volume, for all of which leading experts in the field were able to be obtained, deal with museums, exhibitions and memorial sites which either partially or entirely remember National Socialist injustice or safeguard the memory of the victims such as Mauthausen/Gusen, the Documentation Centre of Austrian Resistance, the Austrian exhibition in Auschwitz, the Vienna Museum of Military History with the extension of its exhibition into the period of the Second World War and the Second Republic, the three Jewish Museums in Austria (Eisenstadt, Hohenems, Vienna), the two armed forces exhibitions, the anniversary exhibitions 2005 (Belvedere, Schallaburg) the Museum of Contemporary History Ebensee and the Educational and Remembrance Site Hartheim. Not least, the book project constituted a critical reflection of the Austrian culture of remembrance of National Socialism and its victims which offers a necessary scientific foundation for enduring further development.

Eine kritische wissenschaftliche Bestandsaufnahme der zeitgeschichtlich relevanten österreichischen Museumslandschaft liegt bisher nicht vor. Die überwiegende Mehrzahl der im Band versammelten Beiträge, für die durchgängig die einschlägige ExpertInnen gewonnen werden konnten, beschäftigt sich mit Museen, Ausstellungen und Gedenkstätten, die ganz oder teilweise an ""das nationalsozialistische Unrecht erinnen oder das Andenken an die Opfer wahren"", wie Mauthausen/Gusen, Dokumentationsarchiv des Österreichischen Widerstandes, Österreich-Ausstellung in Auschwitz, das Wiener Heeresgeschichtliche Museum mit seiner erweiterten Ausstellung in die Zeit des Zweiten Weltkriegs und der Zweiten Repulik hinein, die drei Jüdischen Museen in Österreich (Eisenstadt, Hohenems, Wien), die beiden Wehrmachtsausstellungen, die Jubiläumsausstellungen 2005 (Belvedere, Schallaburg), das Zeitgeschichtemuseum Ebensee und der Lern- und Gedenkort Hartheim. Das Buchprojekt stellt somit nicht zuletzt eine kritische Reflexion der österreichischen Erinnerungskultur an den Nationalsozialismus und seine Opfer dar, die eine notwendige wissenschaftliche Grundlage für ihre nachhaltige Weiterentwicklung bieten kann.
