For Hilde, Hans and Lisa, exile in Moscow, where Elisabeth Markstein was one of the famous Hotel Lux children until 1945, meant only one thing: safety. Grandmother Helene and the entire family of her mother Hilde from Prague was of Jewish origin and in great danger. In “Moscow is much more beautiful than Paris, Elisabeth Markstein recollects not only her own exile, which was characterized by great solidarity and friendship, but also tells of resistance fighters who were killed in the National Socialist concentration camps and executed at the Provincial Court Vienna. Markstein also vividly recalls other emigrants in the years between 1938 and 1945 who had a tougher time than those who were able to survive in the famous Hotel Lux and how they themselves returned to defeated Austria in 1945.

Das Exil in Moskau, wo Elisabeth Markstein in den Jahren bis 1945 zu einem der berühmten Hotel Lux-Kindern wurde, bedeutete nur für Hilde, Hans und Lisa Sicherheit. Großmutter Helene und die gesamte jüdische Herkunftsfamilie von Mutter Hilde aus Prag waren in großer Gefahr. Elisabeth Markstein erinnert sich in „Moskau ist viel schöner als Paris“ nicht nur an das eigene Exil, das gerade in Moskau von großer Solidarität und Freundschaft geprägt war, sondern erzählt auch von Widerstandskämpferinnen und Widerstandskämpfern, die in den nationalsozialistischen KZs umgebracht wurden und im Wiener Landesgericht hingerichtet wurden. Eindringlich berichtet Markstein aber auch von anderen Emigrantinnen und Emigranten in den Jahren zwischen 1938 und 1945, die es schwerer hatten als jene, die im berühmten Hotel Lux überleben konnten und wie sie selbst 1945 in das befreite Österreich zurück kehrten.
