Between 1934 and 1942, 526 Austrians emigrated to Columbia. 526 follows their traces and roundabout routes between Central Europe and South America and tells of hope and the possibility of a new beginning after the destruction and expulsion. Columbia was a destination for refugees of the Austrian Civil War as early as 1934/35. The great majority, however, were Austrian Jews who, fleeing the racial policies of the National Socialists, came to South America after the Anschluss of Austria to Hitler’s Germany. 526 by Nikolaus Braunshör stands for all Austrians who had to leave their homeland and for an even greater number who didn’t manage. 526 is a documentary for an international public between 14 and 49.

Zwischen 1934 und 1942 emigrierten 526 Österreicherinnen nach Kolumbien. 526 folgt ihren Spuren und verschlungenen Wegen zwischen Mitteleuropa und Südamerika und erzählt von Hoffnung und den Möglichkeiten eines Neuanfangs nach Zerstörung und Vertreibung. Kolumbien war bereits ab 1934/35 ein Auffang¬becken für Flüchtlinge des österreichischen Bürgerkriegs. Den Löwenanteil der ImmigrantIn¬nen stellten aber österreichische Jüdinnen, die auf der Flucht vor der Rassenpolitik der Nationalsozi¬alisten, nach dem Anschluss Österreichs an Hitlerdeutschland nach Südamerika kamen. 526 von Nikolaus Braunshör steht für alle Österreicherinnen, die ihre Heimat verlassen mussten und für eine noch größere Anzahl derer, denen das nicht mehr gelang. 526 ist ein Dokumentarfilm für ein internationales Publikum zwischen vierzehn und neunundvierzig Jahren.
