Deserters were considered treacherous war criminals and were sentenced to death by the National Socialist judiciary - the stony path to rehabilitation leads to the recent present. Contemporary witnesses tell of their experiences. The subject is particularly considered taboo in the countryside, deserters and their families are stigmatized and desire recognition of their humanitarian fulfillment of their duty. The documentary film takes a look at courageous silent heroes. With the portrayal of individual fates such as "the chef", "the minister", "the alter boy", "the pig farmer" and the montage of associative scenes with archive material, the resistance of the "man on the street" is to be rendered comprehensible.

Deserteure galten als eidbrüchige Kriegsverräter und wurden von der NS-Justiz zum Tode verurteilt – der steinige Weg zur Rehabilitierung führt bis in die jüngste Gegenwart. ZeitzeugInnen berichten von ihren Erfahrungen. Besonders am Land gilt das Thema als tabu, Deserteure und ihre Familien leiden unter der Stigmatisierung und wünschen sich Anerkennung humanistischer Pflichterfüllung. Die Kinodokumentation wirft einen Blick auf stille Helden mit Courage. Mit der Schilderung von Einzelschicksalen wie, „der Koch“, „der Ministrant“, „der Bauer“, „der Schweinemeister“ und der Montage von assoziativen Szenen mit Archivmaterial soll der Widerstand des „kleinen Mannes“ während des 2. Weltkrieges begreifbar gemacht werden.
