Until now, the Austrian Legion stationed in Germany had been little touched upon by researchers of contemporary history and the number of soldiers belonging to it was also only vaguely outlined. The Austrian Legion comprised over 15,000 activists of the Austrian SA. After the ban on the Nazi Party in June 1933 they fled to the German Reich. A not insignificant number of them had left bloodied traces behind them due to their participation in terrorist attacks. Hans Schafranek's study traces a multifaceted picture of the legion and its protagonists using a large number of sources which had as yet remained unpublished.

Die in Deutschland stationierte Österreichische Legion führte bisher in der zeit-geschichtlichen Forschung nur eine Schattenexistenz und war auch zahlenmäßig lediglich eine vage umrissene Größe. Die Österreichische Legion umfasste mehr als 15000 Aktivisten der österreichischen SA. Sie alle flüchteten nach dem NSDAP-Verbot im Juni 1933 ins Deutsche Reich, eine nicht geringe Anzahl von „Legionären“ hatte zuvor in Österreich durch die Beteiligung an Terroranschlägen blutige Spuren hinterlassen. Hans Schafraneks Studie zeichnet anhand zahlreicher bislang unveröffentlichter Quellen ein facettenreiches Bild der Legion und ihrer Protagonisten.
