In May 2012, Hermann Langbein would have celebrated his 100th birthday, one of the "people of Auschwitz". A native of Vienna and "Austrian patriot", he was known to people throughout the world as a contemporary witness, chronicler and analyst of Auschwitz. He was one of the few Austrians to be honored by Yad Vashem as "Righteous among Nations" as early as 1967. Langbein was virtually alone in publishing analytical, precise reports about the concentration camp and extermination system of the National Socialists shortly after his liberation.

Im Mai 2012 jährt sich zum 100. Mal der Geburtstag Hermann Langbeins, eines „Menschen von Auschwitz“. Der gebürtige Wiener und „österreichische Patriot“ war Interessierten in der ganzen Welt als Zeitzeuge, als Chronist und Analytiker von Auschwitz bekannt. Er wurde als einer der wenigen Österreicher bereits 1967 in der Gedenkstätte Yad Vashem als „Gerechter unter den Völkern“ geehrt. Langbein hat wie kaum ein anderer KZ-Häftling schon kurz nach seiner Befreiung analytisch präzise Berichte über das Konzentrationslager- und Vernichtungssystem der Nationalsozialisten publiziert.
