Description

In Sixteen Months, Ticino-born author Fabio Andina masterfully recounts the story of his grandparents. His grandfather, Giuseppe Vaglio, lived in Cremenaga, a village on the Italian-Swiss border. He helped Jews and wounded partisans cross the Tresa river and escape to Switzerland. On 5 March 1944, Giuseppe was arrested by the SS and sent to the Mauthausen concentration camp. Giuseppe Vaglio survived and made his way back on foot after the camp was liberated. On 6 July 1945, sixteen months after his arrest, he finally returned, wounded, emaciated, and deaf in one ear. He remained silent about his experiences until the end of his life.
