Description

Turl was born in 1913 and grew up in the Leopoldstadt district of Vienna. The son of Helen and Josef Schnierer, he later lost his parents when they were murdered in the Auschwitz concentration camp. In the 1930s, he employed a popular front tactic against the fascists, which included going undercover as a communist in the Fatherland Front. He later maintained contact with leaders of the transport organisation for Spanish Civil War fighters and became active in the French Resistance against the Nazi regime. He helped to free himself and others from a French internment camp. He was eventually arrested again and endured hell in several concentration camps. His survival, and that of many others, was due to the solidarity of the Buchenwald concentration camp committee. Ultimately, the consequences of his imprisonment killed him at a tragically young age in October 1945.
