Description
In the context of the current EU discussion on the co-existence of Roma and Sinti and the majority population in European states, a remembrance ceremony took part in the Baranka Park in Vienna for the third time.
For a long time, the Baranka Park was a camping and recreation area for Sinti, Roma and Lovara families, who traded rugs, fabrics and horses as far as the Graz Basin. Martin Gerlach Jr., a Viennese photographer documented the Hellerwiese in the years 1938 to 1940 and, as such, documented by chance the tragic brief period of the life and disappearance of the people living there. In 1941, their traces mostly ended in concentration camps, among them Baranka, Harri Stojka's great-grandmother.
The date chosen is the birthday of the initiator, Mongo Stojka, a concentration camp survivor.

Im aktuellen Kontext der EU-Diskussion zum Zusammenleben von Roma und Sinti und der Mehrheitsbevölkerung in den europäischen Staaten fand am 20 Mai 2011 die Baranka Park-Gedenkfeier zum 3. Mal in Wien statt. Der Baranka Park war sehr lange Zeit Lager- und Rastplatz der Sinti, Rom und Lovarafamilien, die ihre Teppiche, Stoffe und Pferde bis in das Grazer Becken handelten. Martin Gerlach jun., ein Wiener Fotograph, dokumentierte in den Jahren 1938 bis Ende 1940 die Hellerwiese und hielt damit durch Zufall die tragisch kurze Zeitspanne des Lebens und Verschwindens der dort lebenden Menschen fest. 1941 verloren sich die meisten ihrer Spuren in den Konzentrationslagern, darunter auch Baranka, Harri Stojkas Ur-Großmutter. Nur wenige von ihnen überlebten. Das Datum ist nach dem Geburtstag des Initiators, Mongo Stojka gewählt worden, der ein KZ-Überlebender ist.
