Description
Following the annexation to the German Reich in 1938, the municipal administration in Rankweil was taken over by the Nazi regime. The old cinema was seized, clubs and youth organisations were dissolved, and Nazi organisations and associations were legalised.
Construction began on the South Tyrolean settlement in the centre of the village, comprising a total of nine building complexes. The Valduna charity and mental asylum was converted into a Nazi institution, and in 1941 the deportation of hundreds of inmates began. Almost all of them met their deaths in Hartheim Castle. The publication Rankweil 1938–1945: Eine Gemeinde im Nationalsozialismus (Rankweil 1938–1945: A Community under National Socialism) illustrates how the Nazi regime operated in a small community in Vorarlberg.

Unmittelbar nach dem "Anschluss" 1938 an das Deutsche Reich wurde in Rankweil die Gemeindeverwaltung in den nationalsozialistischen Apparat übernommen, das Alte Kino annektiert, Vereine und Jugendorganisationen wurden aufgelöst und nationalsozialistische Organisationen und Verbände in die Legalität überführt. Mitten im Dorf wurde mit dem Bau der Südtirolersiedlung begonnen, die insgesamt neun Gebäudekomplexe umfasst. Die Wohltätigkeits- und Irrenanstalt Valduna wurde zur Gau-Anstalt umfunktioniert; 1941 begannen die Deportationen von hunderten von Insassen, die fast alle im Schloss Hartheim ihren Tod fanden. Die Publikation „Rankweil 1938-1945 – eine Gemeinde im Nationalsozialismus“ veranschaulicht exemplarisch, wie der Nationalsozialismus in einer kleinen Gemeinde in Vorarlberg funktionierte.
