Appraisal work on the Nazi era

Tens of thousands of slave laborers were imprisoned in Strasshof under the Nazis. At least 15,000 Hungarian deportees were freighted via Strasshof to carry out slave labor in Vienna and Lower Austria. To date, the location of the seven camps has been researched and the people in Strasshof have been interviewed regarding their memories and connections to the transit camp and to other camps in the Nazi era, survivors were visited, memories and documents collected, and the working group Strasshof is working on a list of people (of several hundred currently) in order to give the horrific numbers names and faces. The statements by the surviving eyewitnesses will be used in a brochure for the remembrance ceremony. At the local high school, projects will be carried out on the history of the town, at the primary school an Anne Frank project will be carried out and the opera by Grigori Fried, sponsored by the National Fund, will be performed at the Heizhaus Strasshof three times.

Zigtausende Zwangsarbeiter und Zwangsarbeiterinnen waren im Nationalsozialismus in Strasshof inhaftiert. Mindestens 15000 ungarische Deportierte wurden über Strasshof zur Zwangsarbeit nach Niederösterreich und Wien in den Jahren 1944 und 1945 verfrachtet. Sie mussten vom Durchgangslager Strasshof ausgehend Zwangsarbeit in Wien und in Niederösterreich verrichten. Erforscht wurde bis dato die Lage der sieben Lager, befragt wurden die Menschen in Strasshof zu ihren Erinnerungen und Verbindungen zum Durchgangs-Konzentrationslager und zu weiteren Gefangenenlagern der NS-Zeit, Überlebende wurden besucht, Erinnerungen und Dokumente gesammelt, und die Arbeitsgruppe Strasshof arbeitet an einer Menschenliste (von derzeit mehreren hunderten), um den ungeheuren Zahlen Namen und Gesichter zu geben. Die Aussagen der ZeitzeugInnen fließen in einem Text in eine Broschüre zum Gedenkakt ein. Für die Kinder der Hauptschule werden Projekte bezüglich der Aufarbeitung der Geschichte des Ortes angeleitet, für die in der Volksschule wird ein Anne Frank Projekt initiiert, rund um die Aufführung der Oper von Grigori Fried, gefördert durch den Nationalfonds, die im Heizhaus Strasshof voraussichtlich drei Mal stattfinden wird.
