Recontextualisation and redesign of the Altenberg Peace Memorial

In Altenberg, there is a war memorial on the market square near the parish church. As part of the overall planning for the new market square, a public participation process was launched. The result was that the war memorial should be modernised, recontextualised and turned into a peace memorial. An art competition was then announced and the winning project was unanimously approved by the local council and parish council. The concept is based on a sensitive, reflective dismantling and redesign of the existing war memorial. In order to transform the area in front of the church into a meeting place on the new market square and a place of remembrance for more than just fallen soldiers, a rigorous change is planned. The following text elements will be added: “Never again war, never again fascism” – "In memory of the named and unnamed victims of war and tyranny” – “Franz Peutlberger, Anton Mayrhofer, Katharina Schwarz, Juliane Pichler: victims of the T4 euthanasia programme”.

In Altenberg befindet sich am Marktplatz bei der Pfarrkirche ein Kriegerdenkmal. Im Zuge der Gesamtplanung des neuen Marktplatzes wurde ein Bürgerbeteiligungsprozess gestartet. Ergebnis war, dass das Kriegerdenkmal modernisiert, neu kontextuiert und zu einem Friedensdenkmal werden soll. Daraufhin wurde ein Künstlerwettbewerb ausgeschrieben und das Siegerprojekt im Gemeinderat und Pfarrgemeinderat einstimmig beschlossen. Das Konzept beruht auf einer sensiblen, reflexiven Demontage und Umgestaltung des bestehenden Kriegerdenkmals. Um den Ort vor der Kirche zu einem Treffpunkt am neuen Marktplatz und zu einem Erinnerungsort für mehr als nur für gefallene Soldaten zu machen, ist eine konsequente Veränderung vorgesehen. Folgende Textelemente kommen hinzu: „Nie wieder Krieg, nie wieder Faschismus“ – „Den benannten und unbenannten Opfern von Krieg und Gewaltherrschaft zum Gedenken“ – „Franz Peutlberger, Anton Mayrhofer, Katharina Schwarz, Juliane Pichler: Opfer der Euthanasie-Aktion T4“.
