To mark the 200th anniversary of the Vienna City Temple, in 2026the Jewish Community Vienna plans to publish a commemorative book. The publication will combine elements of well-researched historical documentation with lively insights into everyday and festive life at the City Temple. Special attention will be paid to the hitherto little-researched history of the City Temple during the Nazi era. The publication illustrates how the fate of this central spiritual and cultural site of Viennese Judaism changed under the Nazi regime. It highlights the profound ruptures and losses suffered by the community. In addition, it examines the question of how the material and immaterial damage was dealt with and repaired after 1945 – from the structural restoration to the laborious processes of remembrance and rebuilding religious life.

Anlässlich des 200-jährigen Jubiläums des Wiener Stadttempels plant die IKG Wien im Jahr 2026 die Herausgabe eines festlichen Bandes. Die Publikation vereint auf besondere Weise die Elemente einer fundierten historischen Dokumentation mit lebendigen Einblicken in das alltägliche wie auch festliche Leben des Stadttempels. Ein besonderes Augenmerk gilt der bislang wenig erforschten Geschichte des Stadttempels während der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus. Die Publikation zeigt beispielhaft, wie sich das Schicksal dieses zentralen spirituellen und kulturellen Ortes des Wiener Judentums unter dem NS-Regime veränderte. Sie macht sichtbar, welche tiefgreifenden Brüche und Verluste die Gemeinde erleiden musste. Darüber hinaus wird die Frage beleuchtet, wie die materiellen und immateriellen Schäden nach 1945 aufgearbeitet und behoben wurden – von den baulichen Wiederherstellungen bis hin zu den mühsamen Prozessen des Erinnerns und Wiederaufbaus des religiösen Lebens.
