The 2025 annual conference of the Austrian Society for Exile Research will examine the emotional, romantic and physical experiences of refugees, which have received little attention to date. In situations of flight, “emotional communities” could provide stability and a sense of belonging. Family, marriages and queer networks were also able to make everyday life in exile easier. At the same time, however, gender hierarchical structures could also become more entrenched. Lesbian, gay, queer, intersex and transgender people were marginalised and persecuted. Young women were often diagnosed with compulsive sexuality, which allowed Nazi authorities, for example, to stigmatise those affected as “asocial” and force them to undergo abortions or compulsory sterilisation; women in sex work also suffered this fate. In some cases, the sexual violence often experienced in this context ultimately prompted them to seek exile.

Die Jahrestagung 2025 der Österreichischen Gesellschaft für Exilforschung blickt auf die bisher wenig beachteten emotionalen, romantischen oder körperlichen Erfahrungen von Geflüchteten. In Fluchtsituationen konnten „emotional communities“ für Stabilität und Zugehörigkeit sorgen. Auch die Familie, Ehen oder queere Netzwerke vermochten den Alltag im Exil zu erleichtern. Parallel dazu konnten sich aber auch geschlechterhierarchische Strukturen verschärfen. Lesbische, schwule, queere und inter- oder transsexuelle Menschen wurden ausgegrenzt und verfolgt. Jungen Frauen wurde vielfach eine triebhafte Sexualität diagnostiziert, die es etwa NS-Behörden erlaubte, die Betroffenen als „asozial“ zu stigmatisieren und sie als solche zu Abtreibungen oder Zwangssterilisationen zu zwingen; auch Frauen in der Sexarbeit traf dieses Schicksal. Die in diesem Kontext oft erlebte sexuelle Gewalt gab in einigen Fällen letztendlich den Anstoß dazu, den Weg ins Exil zu beschreiten.
