On 29 October 2025, the second Emile Jules Borremans Memorial Concert will take place in the chapel of the Mauthausen Memorial. It will feature compositions by Borremans and other works by composers who were expelled, deported and murdered. The memorial concert will recall an important event: On 21 June 1944, the musician Emile Jules Borremans was arrested by the Gestapo. He was held in prison in Ghent for two months. In September, he was taken to Mauthausen concentration camp as a so-called Nacht und Nebel (“cloak and dagger”) prisoner. Here he cared for the sick and accompanied them in their final days. On 29 October 1944, he died of hardship and exhaustion. Almost a year later, his breviary was found by chance in the camp and his family was informed of his tragic fate. Among the prisoners were also numerous artists. With their lives extinguished, their art often disappeared as well. We want to remember these artists.

Am 29. Oktober 2025 findet in der Kapelle der KZ-Gedenkstätte Mauthausen das 2. Emile Jules Borremans Gedenkkonzert statt. Es präsentiert Kompositionen von Borremans und weitere Werke von vertriebenen, deportierten und ermordeten Komponisten. Das Gedenkkonzert wird durch ein bedeutendes Ereignis gekennzeichnet: Am 21. Juni 1944 wurde der Musiker Emile Jules Borremans von der Gestapo verhaftet. Er wurde zwei Monate lang im Genter Gefängnis festgehalten. Im September wurde er als so genannter Nacht-und-Nebel-Häftling in das KZ Mauthausen gebracht. Hier pflegte er Kranke und begleitete sie in ihren letzten Lebenstagen. Am 29. Oktober 1944 starb er an Not und Erschöpfung. Fast ein Jahr später wurde sein Brevier zufällig im Lager gefunden und die Familie über sein tragisches Schicksal informiert. Unter den Gefangenen befanden sich auch zahlreiche Künstler. Mit ihrem erloschenen Leben ist oft auch deren Kunst erloschen. Wir wollen an diese Künstler erinnern.
