Landsberg am Lech is regarded as an idyllic small town with a medieval town centre and a rich history. Less visible, however, are the deep scars left by the Nazi era. It was here that Adolf Hitler wrote large parts of “Mein Kampf” whilst in prison in 1923, making Landsberg an important site of remembrance for the Nazi movement. In 1944, the largest complex of satellite concentration camps in the German Reich was also established in the surrounding area. The film “What Remains?” sets out to explore the now often-forgotten sites of this history. It examines how the former camp sites and the “Ringeltaube” armaments project have changed since 1945, and how this legacy is dealt with today. At the same time, it asks what lessons can be learnt from the past – particularly at a time when antisemitism, racism and authoritarian ideologies are regaining influence.

Landsberg am Lech gilt als idyllische Kleinstadt mit mittelalterlichem Stadtkern und reicher Geschichte. Weniger sichtbar sind jedoch die tiefen Spuren des Nationalsozialismus. Hier schrieb Adolf Hitler während seiner Haft 1923 große Teile von „Mein Kampf“, wodurch Landsberg zu einem wichtigen Erinnerungsort der NS-Bewegung wurde. 1944 entstand in der Umgebung zudem der größte KZ-Außenlagerkomplex des Deutschen Reiches. Der Film „Was bleibt?“ begibt sich auf die Suche nach den heute oft vergessenen Orten dieser Geschichte. Er untersucht, wie sich die ehemaligen Lagerstandorte und das Rüstungsprojekt „Ringeltaube“ nach 1945 verändert haben und wie heute mit diesem Erbe umgegangen wird. Gleichzeitig stellt er die Frage, welche Lehren aus der Vergangenheit gezogen werden können – insbesondere in einer Zeit, in der Antisemitismus, Rassismus und autoritäre Ideologien wieder an Einfluss gewinnen.
