The final instalment of the trilogy focuses on the children of parents who were forced to flee during the First and Second Republics, but particularly during the Nazi era. As such, the third and final part of the trilogy on the “Children of the 20th Century” highlights dramatic fates, showing how their parents’ journeys – which were often full of wrong turns and dead ends – have affected their children and grandchildren. In doing so, the filmmaker also recounts the missteps of his own family. The film also explores the causes of refugee movements. Starting with the waves of emigration during Austrofascism—including the February Uprising and Spanish Civil War fighters—and moving through the Nazis’ racially motivated policies of flight and expulsion, the film examines the traumatic consequences for the second, third and fourth generations of refugee families.

In der letzten Folge der Trilogie geht es um die Kinder von Eltern, die in der Ersten und Zweiten Republik, aber auch besonders in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus fliehen mussten. Damit zeigt der dritte und letzte Teil der Trilogie über die „Kinder des 20. Jahrhunderts“ dramatische Schicksale auf, wie sich die Wanderwege ihrer Eltern, die oft Irrwege waren, auf die Kinder und Kindeskinder auswirken. Dabei schildert der Filmemacher auch die Irrwege seiner eigenen Familie. Der Film zeigt zudem die Ursachen von Flüchtlingsbewegungen auf. Ausgehend von den Emigrationsbewegungen im Austrofaschismus der Februar- und Spanienkämpfer über die rassistisch begründete Flucht- und Vertreibungspolitik der Nationalsozialist:innen beschäftigt sich der Film mit den traumatischen Folgen auf die zweite, dritte und vierte Generation der Flüchtlingsfamilien.
