Extension and renovation of the Monument of Names

The aim of the project is to expand and renovate the Monument of Names in Villach city centre. This monument lists the names and dates of birth and death of people who lived in our city and the surrounding communities and who were persecuted and murdered by the Nazi regime for a wide variety of reasons: Jews, Sinti and Roma, Jehovah’s Witnesses, victims of euthanasia, resistance fighters, queer people, forced labourers, but also courageous women and men who simply showed moral courage by speaking out against the regime or helping those who were persecuted. A further 56 names are to be added to the memorial in spring 2026.

Ziel des Projekts ist die Erweiterung und Erneuerung des Denkmals der Namen in der Villacher Innenstadt. Auf diesem Denkmal sind die Namen und Lebensdaten von Menschen verzeichnet, die in unserer Stadt und in den umliegenden Gemeinden gelebt haben und aus den verschiedensten Gründen vom NS-Regime verfolgt und ermordet wurden: Jüdinnen und Juden, Sinti und Roma, Zeugen Jehovas, Euthanasie-Opfer, Widerstandskämpfer:innen, queere Personen, Zwangsarbeiter:innen, aber auch mutige Frauen und Männer, die einfach Zivilcourage zeigten, indem sie sich dem Regime gegenüber kritisch äußerten oder Verfolgten halfen. Das Denkmal soll im Frühjahr 2026 um 56 Namen erweitert werden.
