Steine der Erinnerung im Jahr 2026

 

The association is planning eight opening ceremonies in 2026 across seven districts of Vienna, featuring around 50 memorial sites. The new memorial sites will all be officially unveiled during the opening ceremonies. These include sites requested by residents’ initiatives wishing to commemorate former residents of their buildings. All new stones will be officially unveiled in the presence of relatives and city officials. In addition, brochures containing personal stories will be produced for each district. We are making an important and lasting contribution to Vienna’s process of coming to terms with its past by securing a place for Jewish life and people in the public sphere, thereby stimulating a process of societal reflection. Commemorating individuals by name allows for a personal connection beyond abstract victim figures. The laying of the stones and the unveiling ceremonies will take place in the following Viennese districts: the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 9th, 15th, 16th and 20th Districts.

Der Verein plant 2026 acht Eröffnungen in sieben Wiener Bezirken mit ca. 50 Stationen der Erinnerung. Bei den Eröffnungsfeiern werden alle neuen Stationen der Erinnerung feierlich eingeweiht. Darunter sind auch Anfragen von Hausinitiativen, die der ehemaligen Bewohner:innen ihres Wohnhauses gedenken wollen. Alle neuen Steine werden im Beisein der Angehörigen und Vertreter:innen der Stadt feierlich eröffnet. Zusätzlich werden pro Bezirk Begleitbroschüren mit den persönlichen Geschichten erstellt. Wir leisten einen wichtigen und nachhaltigen Beitrag zur Wiener Vergangenheitsbewältigung, indem wir im öffentlichen Raum das jüdische Leben und die Menschen wieder verankern und dadurch einen gesellschaftlichen Denkprozess anregen. Das namentliche Gedenken erlaubt einen persönlichen Bezug jenseits der abstrakten Opferzahlen. Die Verlegung der Steine sowie die Eröffnungsfeiern finden in folgenden Wiener Bezirken statt: dem 2., 4., 7., 9., 15., 16. und 20. Bezirk.,
