Jüdisches Leben in Wien-Landstraße

Project

Description

At the time of Austria’s “Anschluss” to the German Reich, just under 13,000 people of the Jewish faith lived in Vienna-Landstraße, as well as numerous people of Jewish origin who had officially left the Jewish Community and, in some cases, converted to Christianity. Many of the Jews living in Landstraße came from the eastern regions of the Habsburg Monarchy; they formed a diverse group in religious, social and political terms. The Weißgerber quarter had the largest Jewish population, whilst upper-middle-class families tended to live in the Arenberg quarter and the ‘diplomatic quarter’ around Rennweg. Whether strictly religious, Zionist, non-denominational or baptised – after March 1938, they were all subjected to systematic dispossession, expulsion and extermination on account of their Jewish heritage, with assimilation offering no protection whatsoever against persecution.
