Place of remembrance, information and learning: “Monument to the Anschluss” Oberschützen

Following the “Anschluss” of Austria to Nazi Germany, local Nazis initiated the construction of a “monument to the Anschluss” in Oberschützen, which was completed in 1939 with the help of the local population. The monument stands on a hill and is clearly visible from afar; it consists of a spacious colonnaded courtyard and is regarded as a unique and the largest Nazi monument of its kind in Austria. After 1945, the explicitly Nazi elements of the monument were removed. It was not until 1997 that it was reinterpreted as a memorial against violence and racism, and in 2016 it was listed as a protected monument. As part of the project, proposals were drawn up to redesign the square in front of the monument, and one design was selected. Specifically, four columns displaying information and seating made of exposed concrete are to be erected. For each column, the four panels cover four major thematic areas: historical background, Nazi history, the post-1945 period, and the future. Each panel features images and a main text in German, as well as summaries in Hungarian and English. QR codes link to websites. Presented in a scientifically accurate yet accessible manner, the aim is to inform the public about the history of the monument.

Nach dem „Anschluss“ Österreichs an NS-Deutschland initiierten lokale Nationalsozialisten den Bau eines „Anschlussdenkmals“ in Oberschützen, der mit Hilfe der Bevölkerung 1939 realisiert wurde. Das Denkmal steht auf einer Anhöhe und ist weithin gut sichtbar; es besteht aus einem weiträumigen Säulenhof und gilt als einzigartiges und größtes NS-Denkmal seiner Art in Österreich. Nach 1945 wurden die explizit nationalsozialistischen Teile des Denkmals entfernt. Erst 1997 erfolgte eine Umdeutung in ein Mahnmal gegen Gewalt und Rassismus und 2016 eine Stellung unter Denkmalschutz. Im Zuge des Projektes wurden Vorschläge für eine Umgestaltung des Platzes vor dem Denkmal erarbeitet, und es setzte sich ein Entwurf durch. Konkret sollen 4 Informationssäulen und eine Sitzgelegenheit aus Sichtbeton errichtet werden. Je Säule thematisieren 4 Tafeln 4 große Themenbereiche: Vorgeschichte, NS-Geschichte, Zeit nach 1945, Zukunft. Jede Tafel ist mit Bildern und einem Haupttext in deutscher sowie Zusammenfassungen in ungarischer und englischer Sprache versehen. QR-Codes verweisen auf Webseitenverknüpfungen. Wissenschaftlich abgesichert, aber in verständlicher Sprache, soll so die Öffentlichkeit über die Geschichte des Denkmals informiert werden.
