Following the “Anschluss” on 12 March 1938, Vienna became a model city for the systematic expulsion of Jews. In a very short space of time, Europe’s third-largest Jewish community was wiped out through emigration, deportation and murder. For those who managed to flee abroad, this meant the loss of their civic existence, their possessions and their homeland. Viennese Jews were scattered across the globe: throughout Europe, North and South America, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Oceania. They had to rebuild their lives in a foreign land. The exhibition tells the life stories of displaced Viennese Jews, thereby shedding light on the multifaceted dimensions of loss of home and exile.

Nach dem „Anschluss“ am 12. März 1938 wurde Wien zur Modellstadt für die systematische Vertreibung der Jüdinnen und Juden. In kürzester Zeit wurde die drittgrößte jüdische Gemeinde Europas durch Emigration, Deportation und Ermordung ausgelöscht. Eine Flucht ins Ausland bedeutete für jene, die es schafften, den Verlust ihrer bürgerlichen Existenz, ihres Hab und Guts und ihrer Heimat. Jüdische Wiener:innen wurden in die ganze Welt verstreut: in europäische Staaten, nach Nord- und Südamerika, Afrika, in den Nahen Osten, Asien und Ozeanien. Sie mussten ihr Leben in der Fremde wieder neu aufbauen. Die Ausstellung erzählt die Lebensgeschichten vertriebener Wiener:innen und beleuchtet damit die vielschichtigen Dimensionen von Heimatverlust und Exil.
