The workshop, organised in cooperation with Penn State University and the University of Vienna, will take place in Vienna from 11 to 13 October 2026 and will examine the political dimension of knowledge production in relation to the Holocaust. The aim is to combine an analysis of politics in earlier forms of knowledge production with a reflection on current political challenges in Holocaust research. The workshop analyses the role of political orientations in motivating historical actors to act, but also calls for a self-reflective examination of the political intentions of the discipline and its researchers, as well as the consequences of our work. In light of the rise in cultural analyses of the Holocaust and its post-war repercussions, the workshop will discuss what these methodologically and theoretically diverse approaches can learn from one another.

Der Workshop in Kooperation mit der Penn State University und der Universität Wien, findet vom 11.-13. Oktober 2026 in Wien statt, er untersucht die politische Dimension der Wissensproduktion im Zusammenhang mit dem Holocaust. Ziel ist es, die Analyse der Politik in früheren Formen der Wissensproduktion mit der Reflexion über gegenwärtige politische Herausforderungen in der Holocaust-Forschung zu verbinden. Der Workshop analysiert die Rolle politischer Orientierungen bei der Motivation historischer Subjekte zum Handeln, fordert aber auch eine selbstreflexive Hinwendung zu den politischen Absichten des Fachgebiets und seinen Forschenden sowie zu den Konsequenzen unserer Arbeit. Angesichts der Zunahme kultureller Analysen des Holocaust und seiner Auswirkungen in der Nachkriegszeit wird diskutiert, was die methodisch und theoretisch unterschiedlichen Ansätze voneinander lernen können.
