Description
On 21 March 1945, exhausted Jews were thrown to their deaths from the sheer rock faces at the St. Margarethen quarry. This memorial is intended to commemorate them. It is a sub-project of the wider “Southeastern Rampart Memorial” project. In numerous forced-labour camps along the planned route of approximately 150 km, mostly Hungarian Jews were forced to carry out excavation work by hand with completely inadequate resources. On a short section (max. 50 metres) of this Southeastern Rampart – in the Urbarial Wood behind the Burgenland village of Baumgarten – excavation work is being carried out and a memorial site, complete with documentation, is being established. In addition, information panels providing general information about the Southeastern Rampart and details of the local camp are to be erected at each site of the forced labour camps.

Im Steinbruch St. Margarethen wurden am 21. März 1945 erschöpfte Juden von den schroffen Felswänden in den Tod geworfen. Ihrer soll mit dem hier angeführten Mahnmal gedacht werden Es handelt sich um ein Teilprojekt des umfassenden Projekts "Erinnerungsort Südostwall". In zahlreichen Zwangsarbeitslagern entlang der projektierten Strecke von etwa 150 km mussten größtenteils ungarische Juden mit völlig unzureichenden Mitteln händisch Grabungsarbeiten durchführen. Anhand eines kurzen Stücks (max. 50 Meter) dieses Südostwalls – im Urbarialwald hinter der burgenländischen Ortschaft Baumgarten – werden Aushebungsarbeiten durchgeführt und ein Erinnerungsort samt Dokumentation errichtet. Auch sollen an jedem Ort der Zwangsarbeitslager Dokumentationstafeln mit einer allgemeinen Information des Südostwalls und mit Informationen über das örtliche Lager aufgestellt werden.
